Book Style - Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire - Jack

I am super excited to share this outfit with you. This is another character from Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. This time we are looking at the other half of the two twins in the book: Jaqueline or Jack.

When it comes to Jack, my ultimate goal was to come up with an outfit that embodied an old-fashion professor with a bit of an update to it, so that someone could wear it out to work or a dinner.

For Jack’s look, I started with a pair of black Nina Ricci Striped Skinny Pants and a white Derek Lam Silk Pleated Placket Sleeveless Blouse. Then I finished off the base of the outfit with a dark green Elizabeth & James Jamie Crepe Blazer to give it a bit of a menswear look, and a Proenza Schouler Medium PS1 Satchel.

I wanted Jack and Jill’s outfits to be at least a little bit complimentary, so I added a pair of Victorian Booties from Donald J. Pilner in black and an antique silver locket from 1880.  I wanted to add a nod to Jack’s love of science to this outfit, so I added a Novica Double Helix Onyx and Sterling Silver Modern Balinese Cuff Bracelet.

When it came to any makeup for Jack, I wanted to take an organic approach. In Every Heart a Doorway we don’t get much about the experiments that Jack was running in her portal world, but I like to imagine her playing with plants or found chemicals to create her own skincare and beauty routines. So I started with Lush Cosmetics Ocean Salt Scrub and Farmaesthetics Nourishing Herbal Cream. I also think she might incorporate a toner like Burt’s Bees Rosewater Toner, or a mask like Lush Cosmetics Rosy Cheeks.

For eyes, I selected the Antonym Certified Organic Eyeshadow Quattro in Shimmer Finish and paired it with INIKA Certified Organic Eyeliner in Caviar. For a bit of color, I selected BWC Natural Infusion Matte Lipstick in Belle of the Ball.

The Book That Inspired the Look

Book Cover - Every Heart a Doorway - Seanan McGuireEleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
No Solicitations
No Visitors
No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

No matter the cost.
