As much as I found Catherine West insufferable, I really liked the descriptions of her style in We Could Be Beautiful by Swan Huntley. So I indulged and made an outfit that I will never be able to afford for this edition of Book Style.
I decided to approach this outfit as if money is no object. Every month $80,000 gets deposited into Catherine West’s bank account, and so, she should have no problem affording some of the luxurious high-end brands like those featured in this outfit.
Still, so that this outfit would look like something Catherine would wear, I wanted to keep it in a mostly neutral palette, since in the first chapter Catherine says that she’s wearing white. The marriage themes permeate the novel, and so a light, airy, outfit seemed fitting.
I chose an Eavis & Brown Embroidered Full Midi Skirt and paired it with an Emilio Pucci Silk Chiffon Sleeveless Blouse. Then I added Christian Louboutin So Kate Patent 120mm Red Sole Pump in a nice soft pink to compliment the light colors of the skirt and blouse, and a Chloe Faye Leather Wallet-on-a-Strap. To fight off any chill I added a Tory Burch Scarf.
I also a lot of high-end jewelry featuring diamonds. Since what Catherine wants more than anything is to be married, I added a Simply Vera Vera Wang Diamond Halo Engagement Ring in 14k White Gold. Then I complimented it with a pair of Frederic Sage 18K White Gold White Topaz Diamond Halo Stud Earrings, a Forzieri 0.23 ctw Diamond Flower Pendant 18K White Gold Necklace, and a Blue Nile Diamond Tennis Bracelet.
I imagine that Catherine West’s makeup bag is extensive.I put some complimentary makeup products together for this outfit. The one thing that she expressly talks about is how she loves, and probably overuses, the microdermabrasion scrub. So I put together . Then I added a icrodermabrasion Age-Defying ExfoliatorNARS Sun Was Diffusing Bronzer in Laguna and a Mac Cosmetics Extra-Dimension Skinfinish Highlighter.
For color, I added the NARS NARSissist Loaded Eyeshadow Palette and paired it with Urban Decay Razor Sharp Water-Resistant Longwear Liquid Eyeliner in Demolition so that it wouldn’t look as severe. Then I added a soft pink lip with NARS Lipstick in Sexual Healing. Then last, but not least, I added a NARS Nail Polish in Ithaque.
The Book That Inspired The Look
Catherine West has spent her entire life surrounded by beautiful things. She owns an immaculate Manhattan apartment, she collects fine art, she buys exquisite handbags and clothing, and she constantly redecorates her home. And yet, despite all this, she still feels empty. She sees her personal trainer, she gets weekly massages, and occasionally she visits her mother and sister on the Upper East Side, but after two broken engagements and boyfriends who wanted only her money, she is haunted by the fear that she’ll never have a family of her own. One night, at an art opening, Catherine meets William Stockton, a handsome man who shares her impeccable taste and love of beauty. He is educated, elegant, and even has a personal connection—his parents and Catherine’s parents were friends years ago. But as he and Catherine grow closer, she begins to encounter strange signs, and her mother, Elizabeth (now suffering from Alzheimer’s), seems to have only bad memories of William as a boy. In Elizabeth’s old diary she finds an unnerving letter from a former nanny that cryptically reads: “We cannot trust anyone…” Is William lying about his past? And if so, is Catherine willing to sacrifice their beautiful life in order to find the truth? Featuring a fascinating heroine who longs for answers but is blinded by her own privilege, We Could Be Beautiful is a glittering, seductive, utterly surprising story of love, money, greed, and family.
