In Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire, Nancy is the new girl at Eleanor West’s school, and like all of the other students, she has a style all her own. So here’s an outfit inspired by the “ghostie girl.”
When we first meet Nancy, she’s described on page sixteen as follows:
She was tall and willowy and couldn’t have been more than seventeen; there was still something of the unformed around her eyes and mouth, leaving her a work in progress, meant to be finished by time. She wore black–black jeans, black ankle boots with tiny black buttons marching like solders from the toe to calf–and she wore white–a loose tank top, the faux pearl bands around her wrists–and she had a ribbon the color of pomegranate seeds tied around the base of her ponytail.
So to start with Nancy, I wanted to make sure we had the core of her outfit down, which are the black jeans and the white tank top. For the jeans I chose a pair of black 7 For All Mankind Bootcut Jeans and paired them with a white T by Alexander Wang Racerback Tank. To get a similar look of the boots described, I paired these staples with a Suede Valentina Ankle Boot from SAKS Fifth Avenue.
In this scene, Nancy is carrying a suitcase that appears incongruous to the character. McGuire describes it as:
Her wheeled suitcase was bright pink, covered with cartoon daisies. She had not, in all likelihood, purchased it herself.
So, for this bit of Nancy’s character I added the BEBE Marie 29″ Hardside Spinner Checked Luggage. It’s not exactly a daisy print, but the overall effect is the same.
The rest of this look is all my own addition. One important thing to me, was to keep it as colorless as possible. So when it came to extra jewelry, I selected pearl jewelry with sterling silver accents, and in colors like white and gray. I started with a Chan Luu 18K Gold Plated Sterling Silver & 8mm Cultured Pearl Beaded Necklace then I added a pair of PearLustre by Imperial Freshwater Cultured Pearl Stud Earrings and a Sterling Silver Freshwater Cultured Pearl & Marcasite Ring.
For makeup, I wanted the goal to be a fresh face, free of color, since only the Lady of Shadows is allowed to wear color in the Underworld Nancy visited. So I started with the tarte Cosmetics Color Your World Color Correcting Palette to neutralize any redness or dark spots, and then added Benefit Cosmetics ‘Hello Flawless’ Oxygen Wow Spf 25 Liquid Foundation.
I then added a natural-looking lip with Urban Decay VICE Lipstick in “Naked” and a matching 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil. For a bit of fun, I added a Christian Dior 5 Couleurs High Fidelity Colours Eyeshadow in Color 067 and paired it with a NARS Velvet Eyeliner in “Black Moon” to create a smokey eye effect.

The Book That Inspired the Look
Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.
But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.
Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.
But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.
No matter the cost.
What do you think of this outfit inspired by Every Heart a Doorway? Does it look like something Nancy would wear?
