I’ve been thinking about The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey for a while. Mostly, because I have a rental from iTunes sitting on my account waiting for me to watch it.
Anyway, without watching the movie, I tried to imagine what the characters might wear, and this is what I came up with.
Since the book takes place in a compound controlled by the military and involves a bare-bones lifestyle, I wanted to start with some functional clothing. So the first pieces I picked were a black James Perse Sheer Slub Crew Neck Tee and a pair of Polo Ralph Lauren Cotton Cargo Pants. To add some warmth I added the L.L Bean Lined Freeport Field Jacket and a Chan Luu Women’s Plain Scarf in Shitake.
Since these characters run away from Hungries a lot I added a pair of American Rag Faylln Combat Booties so they can always get away in a hurry. Of course, you should always have a Go Bag ready, just in case, so this look includes a Burberry Classic Rucksack.
Now, when you’re running from Hungries, makeup isn’t the first thing on your mind, so I selected some make up staples that are simple and easy to use. The first is the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream with SPF 50+, because we can’t forget sun protection. I also included a FRESH Sugar Nourishing Lip Treatment.
You may not want to add color, but if you did, I added two eyeshadows palettes to this look. The first is the Naked Basics Palette from Urban Decay. This is a great neutral palette that can used for a natural look or some color correction. For a little more color I added a the Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in 308 Khaki Design.
To really define the eyes I chose Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner in Lionfish and Moray. Last, but not least, to add a bit of color to your lips, I added Too-Faced Melted Liquified Longwear Lipstick in Melted Sugar.
The Book That Inspired the Look
Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh.
Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children’s cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she’ll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn’t know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.
The Girl with All the Gifts is a sensational thriller, perfect for fans of Stephen King, Justin Cronin, and Neil Gaiman
