Book Style // Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley

Book Style - Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley

When a book makes me laugh and cry as much as Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley, I can’t help but keep thinking about it. So I came up with this outfit inspired by the plot of this beautiful and poignant book about the love between a man and his dog.

The star of this book is a lovable dachshund named Lily. To make sure that this book was drenched in dachshund love, I started with a Mini Dachshund Collector T-Shirt from J. Crew. It’s made of an airy cotton that will be perfect for a sunny Los Angeles day. I paired the t-shirt with some Paige Jimmy Jimmy Skinny Jeans for a classic look.

To continue with the dachshund theme I added a Silverplated Dachshund Necklace, a teal dachshund phone case, and a dachshund flask.

For the rest of the outfit I wanted to embody the octopus, the villain of the story and the sea from which they came. To start, I found a pair of hand-painted sneakers depicting an octopus. To continue with the octopus imagery, I added an Oscar de la Renta Octopus Pearl Bracelet. The bracelet looks like the octopus’s tentacles and I love the beautiful, yet menacing look of this piece.

To depict the sea from which the octopus came, I selected this beautiful Jonathan Adler Jet Set Icon Duchess Handbag and a pair of NOVICA Nautical Theme Handcrafted Silver Anchor Earrings.

Lily’s favorite toy is a red ball. So I wanted to add a dash of red into the outfit. The best way I found to do that was to add an Alexander McQueen Embellished Leather Wrap Bracelet. This bracelet looks a bit like a dog leash or collar as well, and fits well with the theme. I also added an Eos Summer Fruit Lip Balm. This looks so much like the red ball that Lily loves that it is impossible not to include it.

I continued the red theme through to the beauty routine with Nars Audacious Lipstick in Lana. Then I topped off the look with a Nars Women’s Dual-Intensity Eye Shadow in Deep End and a Barry M Kohl Eyeliner in Black. As one final touch, I included Essie Nail Varnish in Viva Antigua!

The Book That Inspired The Look

lily-and-the-octopus-9781501126222_hrLily and the Octopus is the dog book you must read this summer…a profound experience.” —The Washington Post

Combining the emotional depth of The Art of Racing in the Rain with the magical spirit of The Life of PiLily and the Octopus is an epic adventure of the heart.

When you sit down with Lily and the Octopus, you will be taken on an unforgettable ride.

The magic of this novel is in the read, and we don’t want to spoil it by giving away too many details.

We can tell you that this is a story about that special someone: the one you trust, the one you can’t live without.

For Ted Flask, that someone special is his aging companion Lily, who happens to be a dog.

Lily and the Octopus reminds us how it feels to love fiercely, how difficult it can be to let go, and how the fight for those we love is the greatest fight of all.

Remember the last book you told someone they had to read?

Lily and the Octopus is the next one.

Lily and the Octopus is available for purchase. You can order a copy at your local independent bookseller, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon

  1. I’ve first noticed the necklace and thought: OMG, SO CUTE! Then I noticed the phone case, the t-shirt, the flask… it all so cute, I want it all! Great choices 🙂

    1. I have the biggest smile on my face right now reading your comment! Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun with this fun. It gave me the chance to do something whimsical and still very much tied to a book I love. I really want that t-shirt and the necklace too.
