I have seen this tag around the blogosphere and recently found it at My Tiny Obsessions and decided to give it a shot.
It’s just past the middle of July so it is still a good time to post the Mid-Year Freak Out Tag!
It’s been a big year and although this blog is still in its infancy, I am eager to look back on what I have read so far this year and look at where I hope to go.
BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ YET IN 2016
Big surprise! City of Thieves by David Benioff is amongst my favorite reads this year. This book appeared in almost every book tag I did, and I even did a Book Traveling Thursdays featuring their international covers.
I read quite a few great books this year and I will keep talking them up a lot, but this one is at the top off my list. Ironic because it actually came out about four years ago.
BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2016
It broke several of my conceptions about middle novels in trilogies, and quite honestly I applaud her call to change the way she told her story. While it is still from Lena’s perspective she shifted from chronological to alternating between “Then” and “Now” chapters.
NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO
There are so many new releases I want to read. It’s been a great year of debuts and releases. Here are a few of the books I am dying to read this year:
MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE 2nd HALF OF THE YEAR
I am very excited for Leave Me by Gayle Forman, which comes out in September.
Her first release for adults, Leave Me sounds like a brilliant novel about a woman who is so busy taking care of her husband and kids that she doesn’t even realize she’s had a heart attack.
When she discovers that her recuperation seems to be an imposition on everyone around her, she packs her bags and leaves. Far away from her family she starts to see her life in a different perspective and is able to own up to the secrets she’s been keeping from herself.
I read the novella Prom and Other Hazards by Jamie Sullivan. When I read it, I had really high hopes that it would open a dialogue about LGBTQIA relationships and gender expression in high school.
What I thought could have been the meatiest part of the novella was rushed and read a bit like the last scene of a 90s movie. It wasn’t bad, but somehow I wanted more.
A Sudden Crush by Camilla Isley was something I didn’t expect to like as much as I did! It’s a romantic comedy, which is a genre I don’t usually read, but this one stayed away from a lot of tropes.
I found myself smiling and laughing as I listened to the audiobook. It was a well-told story. I had one big issue with the story and it had absolutely nothing to do with the relationship or plot at all.
FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR
Clare Mackintosh’s book actually presented me with an odd situation because I found out that she was releasing her second book in the UK later this month, and both my mom and I couldn’t wait to read it.
So, $17 and an order from Book Depository later, I have pre-ordered, I See You, so that we don’t have to wait a year!
NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH
I don’t get a lot of fictional crushes but I think that one of the characters I am most attracted to from the books I read this year is Adam from If I Stay.
Maybe it’s because Adam is a musician? Or maybe it’s because he seems to say just the right thing. Of course, then I read Where She Went and then I hated him a bit, and at the end of that book I couldn’t picture him with anyone but Mia.
Talk about hopeless crushes. This is probably why I don’t get them often.
NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER
Both of the main characters from Code Name Verity! I absolutely love the friendship on display in this book! It’s totally a #friendshipgoals type relationship.
BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY
Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley! This book was a spectacular debut and I absolutely loved it! I am a dog person, I don’t deny that, and that may have swayed my view of this book quite a bit.
I nursed a serious book hangover with this one though. Every time I looked at my dog I would start tearing up.
BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY
Wait? I’m supposed to feel happiness when I read? I am going through my Reading Challenge on GoodReads and going: sad…sad…angry…sad…angry…sad…sad.
I’ve always said that the best books will make me both happy and sad so I am going to say that Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell made me very happy.
There were some great quotes in there that I love. One that sticks out is one about Batman raising both eyebrows.
FAVORITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION
What I think made that movie work, despite all its changes, was that Emma Donoghue wrote the screenplay for it. While changes were made the story still made sense and I loved that about it.
FAVORITE POST YOU HAVE DONE THIS YEAR
My favorite post is one I just did recently! It’s ‘The 100’ Character Book Tag! This book tag pairs characters from The 100 with characters from books.
It was a really hard tag for me to complete (I started it at the end of May) but it was so much fun and I was so excited for how well it turned it out.
If I was basing this solely on reviews I think my favorite review thus far is the review for Delirium by Lauren Oliver.
MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR
All books are beautiful! Are you kidding me! I can’t choose just one!
But if I had to, I would say that Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is a really pretty book. I only purchased the first book in the series but it is absolutely beautiful.
Charlotte Strick designed the book cover and that led me to her website where she has all the other covers that are just absolutely beautiful!
Not only is the cover dynamic but the insides have this beautiful line drawing on them. I haven’t read it yet but it is really gorgeous and I love just looking at it.
If all of the books in this trilogy are really pretty as this one they may get a permanent place on my shelf.
WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR
You’re kidding me right? This is an actual question? I have a lot that I need to read by the end of the year! I have a lot of books to read by the end of the year! Here’s a brief list:
That does it for the Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag. What are you looking forward to reading in the rest of 2016?
I know a lot of people have done this already so I am tagging anyone who wants to do this! Send me a link and I will check out your answers!
