Book Traveling Thursdays // Favorite Book of 2016 So Far

2. Favorite Book of the Year So Far

Book Traveling Thursdays is a weekly feature created by Danielle’s Book Blog and The Girl Who Read Too Much that highlights book covers from around the world

This week we are celebrating the year being half over by looking at our favorite book of the ear so far.

This book came out several years ago but I can’t say enough about it this year so I have to say City of Thieves by David Benioff!

Original Cover

I love the original cover for City of Thieves. Everything from the drawing itself to the typography fits this book perfectly. The stark cover is perfect for the setting and the black sky and snow-covered ground breaks up the space nicely.

Favorite Covers

Although I really love the American cover, my favorite international covers for City of Thieves are Czech, Japanese, and Dutch covers.

I love the Czech cover because of the colors and the fence. The little feather stuck in the fence is a nice touch. It doesn’t quite get the story across but I love the illustration and composition.

The Japanese version is really simple and I love the dozen eggs on the cover with the one red egg for a splash of color.

The Dutch cover is really close to the American cover. I think it looks a little livelier with less black on the top.

Least Favorite Covers

Now onto my least favorite covers for this book! This week the Japanese, Polish, and Spanish covers landed in my bottom three.

The Japanese cover is probably my least favorite. I just have no idea what the speedometers are supposed to do with the story and the book. Did something get lost in translation?

The Polish cover has a nice photograph but also really eerie. I think the book is actually a little funny and that’s why this is in my bottom three.

Oh man, the Spanish cover! What were they thinking? My biggest problem with it is that large egg front and center. Eggs are a huge part of the story but that one is just floating above the city like a spaceship.

And that does it for this edition of Book Traveling Thursday. What is your favorite book you read so far this year?

  1. I love all the selections for best cover! I love the black and white contrast as well, there’s a minimalist feel although there is lots of details. Great job 🙂

  2. I’ve heard of this book before, however I really can’t remember where.
Anyway I like the original cover and the Czech. I just think the colours are so well put together.
I definitely have to agree with you on the three least favourtie covers. They actually make me feel a bit weird. I don’t know if it’s just me (probably is) but whenever I see a really weird looking book cover that doesn’t appeal to me and that I find strange it almost makes me crindge. 😊💙

    1. The original cover is perfect and I do love it so much. I would honestly, highly recommend reading this book, mostly because it is just that awesome. It doesn’t take that long to read either, it’s only about 250 pages.
